#24 New Years Resolution timeThis is a featured page

Just like Santa was invented by Coca Cola…Valentines Day by Tiffany & Co… and Mothers Day by Roses Only….New Years Resolutions were invented by Fitness First or <insert your local gym here>.

For most personal trainers, January is by far the most profitable month of the year…unless of course Anthony Robins rolls through town with a motivational tour (and I didn’t think anyone could have a smile bigger than mine!). Yet inevitably the business dies off sometime in late January when reality sets in for most people...same for the Anthony Robin seminar attendees!

Now I’m not saying New Years Resolutions are a bad thing. On the contrary, I think they can be very powerful, as setting a goal is indeed the first step in getting anywhere. If you don’t know where you are going…any road will get you there.

So here are my big 5 tips for setting a New Years Fitness Resolution that you will keep in 2008.

  1. Write down your resolution. Be very specific here….”Get in shape” is not a goal, “Lose 5 kilos by February” is a goal as it is measurable. If your goal is long term, set milestones along the way.
  2. Remember the five W’s (and one H) of resolutions. The five W’s are: What, Why, Where, When, Who and the H is for How. Confused? Ok a. What you want to achieve b. Why you want to achieve it c. Who you are doing it for d. When you are going to achieve it by e. How are you going to achieve it (training, eating) f. Where are you going to go to reward yourself for reaching your goal
  3. Tell as many people you can about your resolution. If at any stage your resolve begins to weaken just imagine how difficult and embarrassing it will to telling everyone you’ve had to give up! In fact, if you tell me about it and I will bug you each week to see how you are going.
  4. Get someone to buy into your resolution. Find someone who has a similar goal to you, and motivate/train each other.
  5. 21 days to make a habit…21 days to break it. The last and most important thing if you are going to achieve your resolution is getting into a routine, in other words a habit. As the old saying goes if you can do something for 21 days, whether it be a training program or not smoking, you will have a great chance of continuing down that path.
Well that is it for me in 2007, I hope you all had a great Christmas with your family and friends and have a safe New Year.

Me…I’m off to Byron Bay to recharge the old batteries.

Til next month,

Chris
